Geraldine Anne "Gerry" Ferraro (August 26, 1935 – March 26, 2011) was the first female vice-presidential nominee representing a major American political party. She served in the United States House of Representatives from 1979 to 1985 and in 1984 was the Democratic Party's vice presidential nominee, running alongside former vice president Walter Mondale.
